Pilgrims: 286-9 dec ( T. Pope 96, Alex Pusinelli 52); Eton106-9 ( T.Pope 5-23)
Another fine day beckoned with the prospect of a youthful Pilgrims XI going to Eton to play The Ramblers. Captain Pusinelli got us off to a fine start by winning the toss and putting the Ramblers in for some early morning foot pounding.
However the Ramblers, undeterred by the loss of the toss, bowled with much purpose and we were soon teetering on 43-5.
At this point a strong counter-attacking stand by Captain Pusinelli and Pope added 91 in quick time before Pusinelli helped a full toss on leg stump down long leg’s throat after a fine innings of 52. Pope continued to add runs before and after lunch with increasing ease but eventually new personnel in the slips and a change in bowling combined to end his innings for a masterful 96. F Cave (24), W Fortesque (38) and AM Murdoch (27) added meaningful scores in the last 7 overs and brought about a declaration at 286 for 9.
Not content with his efforts with the bat Pope then produced an equally fine display with the ball such that the Ramblers found themselves 43-5 with he having taken all five wickets for 23 included a rare hat trick. So Eton were left to chase 241 off the final 20 overs a task which was clearly beyond the abilities their lower order but who defended stoutly to secure a draw. In truth we really didn’t allow ourselves enough time to bowl them out.
